He was the son of a pastor and was raised in a cultured and religious atmosphere.Early adulthood brought much grief to Vincent van Gogh, who had two turbulent romances and held several unsuccessful careers as a pastor, a clerk, and a salesperson. After being dismissed from his pastoral assignment, which was in Belgium, Vincent van Gogh decided to stay in the area and attend art school. He moved to Paris in 1886 to be with his brother. There he met many of the great impressionist painters of his day.Vincent van Gough was temperamental by nature, but as he spent countless daylight hours painting and night watch hours in deep and passionate conversations, he began to be given to fits of madness. It was during one of these fits that Vincent van Gough cut off part of a painter named Gauguin’s ear. He spent some time in an asylum and committed suicide in Auvers-sur-Oise, in the year 1890, having sold only one painting. |
